Hear the sound of strong winds as you stand 52 meters (171 ft.) high atop the Jules Albert Wijdenbosch Bridge enjoying the great view across the Suriname river late in the afternoon. On the left you can see the city of Paramaribo and on the right the district of Commewijne. Also visible is Nieuwe Haven (New Harbor), the main port facility in Suriname as far as general cargoes and containers are concerned.
The bridge, named after President Jules Albert Wijdenbosch (1996–2000), was completed in the year 2000 and is 1,504 meters (4,934 ft.) long. It consists of two lanes and is not accessible to pedestrians, although clearly that doesn’t stop people from walking across from time to time. 🙂 Whatever you do, don’t look down.
