It’s very late in the afternoon as we stand in Palmentuin (the Palmtree Garden) in Paramaribo. The late afternoon sun casts golden highlights on the very tall palm trees in the park. Listen to the sounds of the insects and the birds as you relax on a bench in the shade of the trees or go for a stroll in the park.

Palmentuin is located right behind the Presidential Palace and dates back all the way to the early 19th century. Many of the palm trees are very old. The park was originally part of the Presidential Palace and wasn’t open to the public. At the end of the 19th century it became accessible to the general public and this has remained so to this day. It’s an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature without going too far away from the city. There’s also a small playground inside the park for kids to play in.
